(Football news) Brentford piled onto more Chelsea misery as they slump to their fifth defeat in five games in all competitions under Frank Lampard. Brentford asserted their dominance at Stamford Bridge when an own goal by captain Cesar Azpilicueta and a then a second-half goal from Bryan Mbeumo handed Brentford a 2-0 win in the London derby.
Chelsea are in 11th place in the Premier League table and subsequently heading for their worst campaign since the 1993-94 season when they finished 14th under Glenn Hoddle. Brentford started off the scoring when they went ahead as Mathias Jorgensen headed the ball into the net from a corner at the near post but the ball unfortunately struck Azpilicueta and went in after 37 minutes,
Lampard who is Chelsea’s third coach this season after the sacking of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter brought the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to mainly sought out their goal drought as they have scored only one goal in seven games in all competitions.
Substitute Mbeumo put the final nail in the coffin as the Blues conceded the second goal in the 78th minute when his fiercely hit shot was deflected beyond Kepa Arrizabalaga who had no chance to save the shot. The three points has pushed Brentford up a spot to ninth in the league, eight points ahead of their west London rivals who at this point want this season to get over and get a new manager in for next season.
“This is not a sob story but everything is going against us,” Lampard told BT Sport, saying Chelsea had controlled much of the game but failed to create clear chances, something he attributed to a lack of confidence.
“We would love a magic wand, a magic moment. It doesn’t come in football because the Premier League moves so fast, it’s competitive,” the former midfielder who is Chelsea’s all-time top scorer, said. “So we will have to fight for our moment.”
“You can’t take that for granted. That takes a lot of hours on the training pitch, in the offices, over a year to be in a position where we are now,” he said.
