Chelsea set to play Brighton in 3rd round

When Chelsea hosts Brighton & Hove Albion in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, they will be hoping for some relief from their Premier League struggles

(Football news) The Blues’ most recent match ended in a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa at home, while the Seagulls, who are currently on a roll, defeated Bournemouth 3-1. Malo Gusto was sent off in the 58th minute, and Ollie Watkins scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd, as Chelsea suffered yet another heartbreaking loss at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Only two teams Luton Town and Burnley have scored less Premier League goals than Chelsea’s five this season. Mauricio Pochettino’s club has now lost three of its six Premier League games in 2023–24, earning just one victory in the process.

Because of this, the Blues are currently in 14th place in the standings, 10 points behind third-placed Brighton, and only four points above the relegation zone, while the 2020–21 Champions League champions are already nine points outside the top four.

Pochettino will be expecting a better performance from Chelsea on Wednesday after their disappointing win against AFC Wimbledon to start their EFL Cup campaign last month. Chelsea came from behind to win by a slim 2-1 margin against the fourth-tier team.

In contrast, Brighton has had an impressive start to the season, winning five of their first six Premier League games and staying close to Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the rankings.

After two straight 3-1 wins against Manchester United and Newcastle United, Roberto De Zerbi’s team suffered a 3-2 Europa League defeat to AEK Athens last week, but they quickly got back on track with a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth the following weekend.

After the first half, the score remained tied at 1-1. Kaoru Mitoma, who had been on the bench, came off the bench to complete the comeback for the Seagulls, who have now scored at least three goals in five of their six league games this season.

With 18 goals in their first six games, Brighton is the highest scorer in the Premier League this season thanks to De Zerbi’s creative offensive style, and they will be hopeful of inflicting more suffering on struggling Chelsea.
