Chelsea midfielder nearing an exit from the club as negotiations improve

There are allegedly talks between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid about Conor Gallagher's transfer
Chelsea

(Football news) The midfielder, who captained his boyhood team for the bulk of the previous season, has made no secret of his desire to stay at Stamford Bridge and continue to represent his team.

With five goals and seven assists, Gallagher contributed spectacularly and was crucial in keeping Chelsea in the top six of the Premier League rankings.

But rather than giving Gallagher a contract extension through 2025, it has long been known that Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are willing to cash in on the player.

The possibility of Gallagher extending his contract before leaving on a free transfer has always there, but if he chooses that course of action, the England international will be idle for a while.

Chelsea, Atletico begin talks

Chelsea and Atletico are now in direct talks to determine whether they can agree a deal for Gallagher. Previous reports have indicated that the respective clubs have been far apart in their valuation of the player, his contract situation not helping matters.

Nevertheless, Romano suggests that Chelsea are prepared to lower their previous demands of in excess of £40m and instead drop their asking price to €35m (£29.47m).

Although it is added that would increase to €40m (£33.68m) with other clauses, the fee is far more attainable for Atletico than it once seemed.

Diego Simeone has allegedly had Gallagher on the top of his midfield shortlist since May, a factor that will inevitably play its part in the player’s decision.

Earlier this month, it was claimed that England teammate Kieran Trippier, who previously represented Atletico, had spoken favourably to Gallagher about his experience.

Will there now be a swift conclusion?

With Gallagher having now had two weeks off since England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, he is approaching the time when he would expect to return to training.

However, with Chelsea currently in the United States, there is little chance of him flying out should a transfer be in the offing, subsequently speeding up the exit process should a fee be agreed.

Both clubs will want to find a resolution as soon as possible. Chelsea wish to push ahead with adding a new striker to their ranks, while Atletico would want to provide Gallagher with time to settle before the start of the new La Liga campaign.
