Roston Chase is embracing the rich legacy of West Indies Test captaincy as he steps into the role, following in the footsteps of legends like Frank Worrell, Garfield Sobers, Clive Lloyd, and Viv Richards. His appointment comes after a “detailed assessment process” by Cricket West Indies, despite his last Test appearance being in March 2023.
Chase, a 33-year-old Test all-rounder with 49 matches under his belt, shared a personal anecdote that shaped his career. He recalled how, at 18, his mother gave him a two-year ultimatum: solidify his place in the Barbados team or commit to his university studies. This challenge, combined with his deep passion for cricket and his father’s unwavering support, became a pivotal driving force.
Recognizing the weight of West Indies’ illustrious Test history, particularly the dominant era of the 1980s, Chase stated, “Captaining the West Indies is a great job to have, and there’s a legacy attached to it. Playing for the West Indies means everything to me, so I’m ready for the responsibilities which come with the job.”
The West Indies have a relatively light Test schedule in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, with only 13 Tests planned, plus a non-WTC Test against Afghanistan in 2027. Chase’s first assignment as Test captain will be a three-match home series against Australia, starting on June 25th in Bridgetown.
