Knight to undergo scans on hamstring injured during unbeaten 66 in third and final T20I
Alice Capsey has been brought into the England Women’s ODI squad to face West Indies as cover for captain Heather Knight, who sustained a hamstring injury during her unbeaten half-century in the final T20I at Chelmsford. Knight’s 66 off 47 balls helped England secure a 3-0 series sweep.
Knight was scheduled to undergo scans on her right hamstring today (Tuesday). She battled through discomfort to complete her innings but did not take the field for West Indies’ innings.
The England squad will also be boosted by the return of pace bowler Lauren Filer, who is now available for the first of the three ODIs in Derby on Friday after recovering from a knee injury sustained during the Ashes in January.
In the final T20I, Knight was the standout performer as England posted 144 for 5. The bowlers, including Lauren Bell, Em Arlott, Linsey Smith, and Charlie Dean, shared the wickets evenly to restrict West Indies to 127 for 8, despite another strong effort from captain Hayley Matthews. Capsey, batting for the first time in the series, scored 4 runs.
The series victory marked Nat Sciver-Brunt’s first series win as captain since taking over from Knight. Sciver-Brunt praised Knight for her courageous innings, calling it “pretty special” to set a winning total against Matthews’ 3 for 32 and an impressive debut from Jahzara Claxton (1 for 15).
Sciver-Brunt acknowledged that England’s fielding was not at its best, with three dropped catches, but emphasized the team’s commitment to maintaining high standards.
Filer will join fellow seamers Kate Cross and 19-year-old Mahika Gaur in the ODI squad. Issy Wong, who played only the T20I leg, makes way. All-rounder Sciver-Brunt, who has been playing solely as a batter due to an Achilles tendon issue, is uncertain about when she will resume bowling, though she is “definitely planning on bowling during the World Cup” in India later this year. She expressed satisfaction with her physical condition and batting performance in the T20I series, where she scored 92 runs, including a decisive 55 not out in the second T20I.
