(Tennis news) Cameron Norrie progressed into the quarter-finals of Indian Wells after defeating Andrey Rublev 6-2 6-4. The British number 1 reached the quarter-finals for the third consecutive year and extended his 2023 record to an impressive 21-3 (21 wins and 3 losses) while his record against Rublev is now 2-2. It took Norrie just 75 minutes to defeat Rublev, thereby claiming his eighth successive victory in what was one of his best performances of the season so far. The 27 year old recently won the Rio Open, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final and will now take on either Frances Tiafoe or Alejandro Tabilo in the last eight.
The match began with three successive service breaks and Norrie went on to take a 3-1 lead, breaking for the third time to close the first set. The Rio Open winner managed to convert all five break points and struck 16 winners against 11 unforced errors. Rublev was seen shouting and hitting himself with his racket in frustration everytime he made an error early on and Norrie eventually broke the 25 year old Russian’s serve to take the first set 6-2.
In the second set, Norrie continued to show his dominance as he broke Rublev in the third game of the second set to take a 2-1 lead and then made it 5-2. The Russian then saved a match point in the next game, fighting back to break Norrie but the World Number 12 maintained his composure and intensity to take the second set 6-4. In other results Daniil Medvedev overcame German Alexander Zverev 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 to reach the quarter-finals where he will face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
