(Tennis news) Cameron Norrie overcame Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-2 in a match that lasted two hours and 40 minutes to progress into the second round. The British tennis star looked to be heading for defeat after losing the first set via a tiebreaker and going 4-1 down in the second. However, the 12th ranked player took the next four games in a row to claim the set and then broke Daniel twice in the third to secure his comeback win. The reigning Rio Open winner, who defeated Carlos Alcaraz, secured his 20th win of the season.
Speaking after the match, Norrie said “I was not really happy with myself, I should have won that first set, lots of chances, and I think it carried over a little bit into the start of the second set. But I was able to really play point for point and then really come back and play some of my best tennis. I played a solid third set and I think it could have been a lot more comfortable but he fought hard. I’m happy to be riding the wave right now, but I still have a lot of things to work on. It was not the prettiest of matches today, but I’ll take it.”
Cameron Norrie will now face either Andrey Rublev or Ugo Humbert in the fourth round of the Indian Wells on Tuesday while Andy Murray will take on Jack Draper in an all-British clash today. Emma Raducanu will face 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in the next round.
