(Football news) This week, both teams have FA Cup misdeeds to make up for: the Hatters were forced to play a replay against Bolton Wanderers, while the Clarets were eliminated from the competition with a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs were initially helpless against Vincent Kompany’s resolute backline in the FA Cup, but Burnley gave another Champions League candidate a serious run for their money. Burnley concluded 2023 with a heroic effort against Aston Villa, albeit without any points to show for it.
It appeared that a rematch at Turf Moor would be forthcoming, but with 78 minutes remaining, Pedro Porro, the right-back for Tottenham, scored an incredible long-range goal into the top corner to send Burnley packing in the third round and consign Kompany’s team to their third straight defeat.
Following a humiliating 5-2 loss to Tottenham in September, Kompany rightfully praised last weekend’s efforts as a “clear sign of improvement” from his players. From this point on, their only focus will be on Premier League games until the conclusion of the season.
Whatever happens during a compressed Premier League gameweek, Burnley will stay in 19th place below the dotted line. This is because their opponents, Luton, are four points ahead of them, and Sheffield United, who are two points below the Clarets in the standings, are off this coming weekend.
Burnley could now tie an unwanted record of losing 10 of their first 11 home games in a single season; only the 1970–71 Newport County crop has suffered the same fate in English Football League history. Burnley’s losses at Turf Moor since the 5-0 demolition of the Blades in December, however, have returned them to losing ways.
