Bottas: Alfa Romeo’s 2023 Formula One vehicle “born” but missed winter goals

According to Valtteri Bottas, Alfa Romeo's C43 Formula 1 chassis was "born" with performance levels that were below the team's goals for 2023, and advancements have done little to change that.

(Motorsports news) The Swiss team has only scored nine points through the first 12 races of the season, compared to 51 points at the same period last year. The best finish so far this year belongs to Bottas, who finished ninth in Bahrain during the season opener. Bottas explained that the team started the season from a worse position than last year and has been unable to catch up with its advances over the year relative to the other teams in explaining where the team has fallen short.

Despite his dissatisfaction with the current car’s performance, Valtteri Bottas believed that the team should learn from it in order to improve its 2024 plans rather than grow discouraged and lose sight of its ongoing advancements. Everyone on the team is aware that this season’s start was not as strong as it was last year, and it has been challenging to recover from that point, according to Bottas. “Yes, we have been providing updates, but so have all the other parties. That is the process.

“We’re not happy with the performance right now, and racing in the rear when you want to be near the front is difficult. Nevertheless, we must look ahead and start developing a solid plan for the following year before we lose patience. “Yes, we have been outdeveloped. Additionally, the car’s first pure performance level was below what we desired due to the manner it was built. Since then, everyone has improved, and certain teams, most particularly McLaren, have taken significant steps.

“By those performance targets,” the speaker means, “I mean where we wanted to be in terms of what we find in old areas, whether it’s mechanical, whether it’s aero, whether it’s about tyres – the level where we started wasn’t where we wanted to be.” According to Bottas, the team’s successful start to the 2018 season, in which it had one of the few vehicles that had been able to achieve the weight objective under the new regulations package, has made 2023’s efforts appear less successful.

Although the C43 wasn’t inherently defective, he believed that little flaws throughout the entire car had combined together to do damage, and that the team’s regression to the mean throughout the second half of last year was a better representation of the team’s potential. “I believe that the first five or six races of last year were perhaps a little better than they actually were due to certain teams experiencing difficulties, and we were one of the only teams within the weight restriction, Bottas said.

“Then the middle and finish of the season was perhaps more indicative of where we were. But even from that, we anticipated moving forward. No single aspect of the car, team, or factories stands out as weak. only a few little items mixed here and there. We just have to keep working harder than other teams. The only option is that. “We must develop a clear plan and take a look at the future. Evidently, there have been numerous changes to the team, management, and key positions.
