BCCI to release advertisement for new coach soon : Jay Shah

(Cricket News) BCCI secretary, Jay Shah disclosed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will soon be releasing advertisements for the appointment of a new coach. He said that Rahul Dravid, the current head coach will have to reapply if he wishes to continue.

Dravid originally was appointed as the head coach by the BCCI for a two-year period. On conclusion of the 50-over World Cup at home, he along with his support staff was granted an extension till the T20 World Cup, starting next month.

Jay Shah also pointed out that the new coach will be appointed looking at a broader picture on a long-term basis. He will serve for a initial period of atleast three years.

“Rahul’s tenure is only up to June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so,” the BCCI secretary said. Other members of the coaching staff, such as batting, bowling, and fielding coaches, will be decided after consultation with the new coach. Shah did not rule out the possibility of a foreign coach and left the issue open-ended.

“We cannot determine whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign. It will be up to the CAC, and we are a global body,” the BCCI official said, hinting that the board is unlikely to consider different coaches for different formats, a system adopted by boards like the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and even the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“That decision will also be made by the CAC. There are many all-format players, like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, among others. Moreover, there is no precedent for such a situation in India.”

Shah also addressed questions related to the impact player rule in the IPL, but was non-committal regarding the continuation of the rule. He however emphasized the factor, that the rule allows an extra Indian player to feature in the 11, providing chances to domestic talents of the country.

“Impact player was a test case. Two new Indian players are getting a chance in the IPL,” he stressed when it was pointed out that the rule might not favor all-rounders. “We will discuss with the stakeholders – franchises and broadcasters – before deciding on the continuation of the Impact Player. It’s not permanent, but no one has provided feedback against the rule,” he said.
