(Football news) Bayern Munich won their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title in dramatic fashion with a 2-1 win over FC Koln as Jamal Musiala’s 89th minute goal helped them grab the Bundesliga trophy from the hands of Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund went into the last game of the season in top spot but then suffered a 2-2 against Mainz which subsequently allowed Bayern to win the title in the tightest league race in years.
Bayern were not expected to celebrate but they ended up being the unexpected title winner while Dortmund’s dreams were left in tatters as they needed a victory to become champions. Bayern finished on 71 points and won the title on goal difference while RB Leipzig and Union Berlin were third and fourth respectively and will compete in the Champions League next season. Hertha Berlin and Schalke were relegated while Stuttgart will again play the playoffs for a second year running.
The title was the first piece of silverware in what has been a frustrating season for Bayern, as chief executive Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamdizic were sacked as they are going for an entire rebuild this summer. The sacking of Julian Nagelsmann in late March and the arrival of Thomas Tuchel was the ideal situation, the team crashed out of the German Cup and the Champions League quarter finals this season as the Bayern board are going to have crunch talks on May 30.
Kingsley Coman settled the nerves early on in the game when he put them into the lead with a brilliant curled shot into the top corner. The Bavarians knew that they just had to control the first half without risking too much. Leroy Sane did score after the break but his goal was disallowed by VAR review for handball. FC Koln earned a 80th minute penalty and Dejan Ljubicic scored to level the scores which meant that Dortmund were winning the title. In the 88th but Musiala turned out to be the hero as he curled a low drive into the far post.
“It is unbelievable that I experienced such a title race,” said Bayern’s Thomas Mueller, who celebrated a league-record 12th Bundesliga title. “We conceded an equaliser just as we have done the entire season and then Musiala drills in the winner. That makes you crazy.
“People interested in football have the feeling that we do not deserve this and I clearly say I understand that because of the second half of the season being so chaotic for us. But it is still an unbelievable moment. Crazy, electric. I hoped it would happen but did not think it would,” Mueller added.
