(Football news) Bayern Munich forward Leroy Sane scored a late goal to help them claim a 1-1 draw at home against Borussia Monchengladbach and subsequently maintain their unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season. It came under serious threat as Sane curled in his effort into the bottom corner in the 83rd minute for Bayern who were rewarded for their relentless pursuit for an equaliser after squandering several chances and being kept at bay by the impressive Yann Sommer.
Sommer made a Bundesliga record as he made 19 saves, bettering Alexander Schwolow's previous mark of 14 saves for Hertha Berlin. Earlier, Monchengladbach went ahead in the 43rd minute when the young french striker Marcus Thuram slid the ball past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for his sixth goal in all competitions this season already but Bayern had themselves to blame with Dayot Upamecano failing to clear a long ball. Bayern were a constant threat in the first half and then Sane wasted two chances before new signing Sadio Mane had two goals chopped off for an offside, much to the frustration of the home fans. Julian Nagelsmann's side were firm favourites to win the match after a 7-0 hammering of VfL Bochum which made it three wins in their opening three games of the season but they struggled against a spirited Yann Sommer who single handedly made sure Gladbach get a point out of the game.
"We had 35 shots on goal, that's not a bad number. I'm annoyed because we played well… the only thing I can blame my team for is not converting our chances. Despite the result, I actually think this was our best game so far this season."said Nagelsmann.
"It takes a lot for something like this to happen. As a goalkeeper, you need to have a good day," said Sommer. "Bayern are really in an unbelievable form and put on a lot of pressure."
Anthony Modeste scored his first goal for Borussia Dortmund and helped them clinch a narrow 1-0 win against Hertha Berlin. The result now means that Dortmund are in fifth place after four games and they were handed a much-needed boost following their stunning late 3-2 collapse against Werder Bremen last week. Hertha started the match very brightly but Dortmund carried the greater attacking threat and were rewarded in the 32nd minute when Modeste towered above the Hertha defence to head home from a Salih Ozcan cross.
Dortmund kept up the pressure in the second half but were wasteful in front of goal, with Marco Reus and Karim Adeyemi both failing to capitalise on glorious chances after being put through by Jude Bellingham. Hertha nearly scored an equaliser in the 68th minute but Stevan Jovetic's effort from distance was tipped over by Gregor Kobel before Bellingham further added to the frustration of the visitors when he curled his effort wide. Despite the odd chance, Hertha failed to take advantage of Dortmund's misfiring forward line as Hertha Berlin fell to their third defeat in four games and left Sandro Schwarz's team in 17th position.
