Barcelona sign Marcos Alonso and Hector Bellerin on deadline day

(Football news) Barcelona have had a transfer window for the ages as they have signed a total of 7 players. They have closed the window with a bang after securing the signatures of Marcos Alonso and Hector Bellerin. Alonso was a signing which was reported since the beginning of the window and the Spaniard hasn't been a part of any matchday squad for Chelsea because of it. Barcelona's trouble in registering players is what had caused the deal to be postponed. The Bellerin deal on the other hand has developed late on. Barcelona now have a pretty strong squad that is more than capable of winning titles after their trophyless last season. The signings have come at a cost as Barcelona have pulled quite a few financial levers to register these signings.

Marcos Alonso has been linked with Barcelona for a long time now. Xavi has already started to phase out Jordi Alba by playing La Masia graduate Alex Balde. There were a few reports that the Blaugrana were planning to offload Alba but that hasn't happened. Now with Alonso, Alba and Balde; Barcelona will have a lot of depth in the left back spot. Alonso had a decent season at Chelsea last season and he will be looking to replicate that in Barcelona. He is a naturally attacking left back who will bring a lot of quality down that side. Despite being Spanish and a Real Madrid academy graduate, Alonso has made just 1 substitute appearance in La Liga. The new league will be a challenge for him and it will be interesting to see how he copes with it.

The Catalan club sold Sergino Dest in this window and they were looking for a right back. Juan Foyth was one of the options but the deal didn't progress. Hector Bellerin was never going to stay at Arsenal. He spent last season on loan at Real Betis and there were reports that he would join permanently this season. Bellerin was born in Barcelona and played in La Masia before joining Arsenal so it would be a homecoming of sorts. He has however signed only a one year contract despite being 27 years old which is an indication that he isn't the long term option the Blaugrana are looking for. He will be competing with the likes of Sergi Roberto, Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde for a spot in the team even though none of them are natural right backs.

Barcelona have made a lot of good signings but they have put their future in jeopardy. The club sold their TV rights in order to register their signings and even after that there is no clarity on whether their two latest editions are registered. Signing 34-year-old Robert Lewandowski isn't something which will benefit their distant future but it will secure the next 2-3 years for them. Looking at their squad now, Barcelona look very powerful. Xavi will be under a lot of pressure and will be expected to do well in all competitions to justify the amount of money the club has spent.
