(Football news) The pre World Cup period of the season brought a big disappointment for Barcelona as they dropped down to the Europa League for the 2nd consecutive time. Domestically on the other hand they did really well as they were top of the table. Now they need a win over Espanyol to go back on top before the New Year. Barcelona have fixtures in the Europa League, Spanish Super Cup, Copa del Rey and La Liga in January wiich makes their schedule jam packed. It is very crucial that they start off with a win here.
Robert Lewandowski was sent off in the last game before the break against Osasuna. He later made an insulting gesture after which he was banned for 3 games. Barcelona have appealed against the ban which has put it on hold meaning that Lewandowski will be available but he could face a ban in the future. Ousmane Dembele and Jules Kounde played in the World Cup final therefore they may not start the game. Ronald Araujo, Franck Kessie and Sergi Roberto have all recovered from their injuries and will be available. As for Espanyol Keidi Bare is out of contention while Adria Pedrosa is a doubt.
Injuries were the main reason Barcelona couldn’t make it past their group in the UCL. Now they have their entire squad fit which is very crucial. It will be interesting to see how Xavi handles the likes of Raphinha, Dembele, Kounde and De Jong who have played significant minutes at the World Cup. Former Real Madrid striker Joselu will be the player who Barcelona will have to keep an eye on. Former Barcelona player Carlos Braithwaite will be looking to prove a point against his old club given how the club forced him out.
