Shakib Al Hasan, one of Bangladesh’s greatest all-rounders called time to his T20 career earlier last month. Bangladesh is currently preparing for its T20I series against India which starts on the 6th of October. This will be the side’s first T20I series post Shakib’s retirement, as they would enter into a new era in their cricket’s history.
Shakib’s T20I career lasted 17 years and 209 days, more than any other player in the world and the 37-year-old is both Bangladesh’s top run-getter and wicket-taker in the shortest format.
As part of their preparations for the forthcoming three-match T20 International that starts in Gwalior, the national cricket team is discussing a lot of permutations and combinations in the dressing room. Bangladesh will undoubtedly miss Shakib’s contributions and experience, but they should now concentrate on Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who is seen as the long-term alternative and has returned to T20Is after a 14-month absence.
It also raises the question of whether, despite being among the finest in the business to bowl inside the first six overs, Mahedi Hasan will have to make room for Mehidy in the playing XI.
Former national spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed believes it’s a terrific chance for the youngsters who had to wait years after Shakib became a regular in Bangladesh T20I cricket.
“I think that’s important for both Mehidy and Mahedi to get the opportunity and they avail the opportunity for Bangladesh and for themselves also,” Mushtaq said.
“I think both Mehidy and all the spinners can bat. But they are right-handers. I’m not saying right-handers cannot win you matches. Opposition always struggles when you have left-handers in your middle overs,” he added.
“I think Mehidy and everyone who plays white ball cricket has to improve their batting like Shakib used to do. Obviously, they also need to win matches with the bat.” That’s a great opportunity for the people who were waiting many many years. Especially Mehidy, if he is getting his opportunity, he should take his opportunity.”
Mushtaq went on to say that Shakib’s biggest strength—and the one that will most likely be missed—remains his enormous heart, therefore the players who take over for him must also possess that quality.
