(Cricket news) The Bangladesh national cricket team won the ODI series 2-1 against South Africa on Wednesday. Temba Bavuma won the toss and decided to bat first, they were on course to put up a decent score when the scorecard read 66/1 even proved his decision right, but what followed from the Bangladesh team was absolute carnage. Their bowlers picked up one after another South African wickets and eventually bundled out the Proteas for a paltry 154.

Even the lady luck was on Bangladesh's side as some poor balls also ended up getting some loose wickets for them. Taskin Ahmed was the star with the ball with figures of 5/35. In the chase too, both the openers, Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal initially had luck on their side at the beginning of the chase but later on found some rhythm and cashed in on the opportunity by beautifully guiding them to a historic series win in South Africa. Liton fell on 48 runs, but a ruthless Tamim carried his bat with an unbeaten knock of 87 runs that came off 82 balls with 14 fours in the innings

Bangladesh had won the first ODI pretty convincingly in Centurion but South Africa had struck back in the second game at Johannesburg. The Tigers won the third ODI in Centurion and clinched the historic series for the first time in their cricketing history. Suddenly, South Africa's path to the 2023 World Cup looks dangerously difficult as only the top eight sides in the Super League standings will qualify for the tournament and Bavuma's side are currently ninth. Their remaining fixtures are three games each against the top sides- India, England and Australia, and two matches against the Netherlands. On the evidence of the Bangladesh series, the only  points on offer against the Dutch matches can be considered safe.

Over the past year or so Bangladesh have beaten the likes of Australia, Pakistan and now South Africa as they are slowly turning themselves into a cricket force to reckon with. Bangladesh has never won against South Africa in their 28 previous matches in South Africa across all the formats; they had won only one match at the 2007 T20 WC game against West Indies at the Wanderers. On top of that they never really had been competitive in their nine bilateral series in the country before this series . In a total of 71 bilateral series outside of Bangladesh they had won only 10 and  four of those were against the West Indies and they had beaten heavyweight opponents. Not only did Bangladesh beat more or less the same personnel who routed India 3-0 in an ODI series in January, but they beat them all ends up twice in six days to claim the rubber.
