(Cricket news) Avesh Khan had played nine matches while taking five wickets prior to this season of Indian Premier League. This season, he has spearheaded the bowling attack for Delhi Capitals which include experienced players like Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Amit Mishra and Axar Patel.
Avesh has played thirteen matches for the Delhi Capitals and has picked up 22 wickets with an economy of 8.21. In the second phase in UAE, Avesh struck in the third match against Kolkata Knight Riders which eventually the team lost but the pacer bowled three overs for 13 runs and took three wickets. In the very next match against Mumbai Indians, Avesh again struck with the ball as he took three including Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma.
In yesterday’s match against Chennai Super Kings, Avesh bowled an excellent over as he gave away only three runs while taking the wicket of MS Dhoni and even Ravindra Jadeja was unable to beat the pacer as he swung the bat in vain. Even though the pacer is only 25 years old and has had little exposure, he has shown great form with his deliveries crossing the 140 km/ hour mark. Avesh is currently the second highest wicket taker in the league and the highest in his team, although the team has qualified for the playoffs there is still a lot to do.
Avesh has bowled the second most dot balls this season only behind Mohammad Shami, Avesh bowled 13 dot balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad and 16 dot balls against Mumbai. He has also performed well under pressure even while facing the best batsmen. He had a broken thumb in his other hand while playing against Chennai yesterday and did not let it affect his bowling. The T20 World Cup will start in a few days and the selectors will maybe think of adding a few youngsters after seeing their performance in the league with the bat and ball.
Delhi still has one more match to play before the playoffs and are currently the table toppers as they edged out Chennai in their last match. Avesh has picked up 8 wickets in five matches in the UAE and 14 wickets in eight matches in India. He needs eight more wickets to break Rabada’s record of 30 wickets in a season for the Delhi Capitals, as the team has handful of matches left at the league the young bowler has to look at the bigger picture. Avesh can learn from the bowlers who are with the team and currently is four wickets behind Orange cap leader Harshal Patel.
