(Cricket news) Australia topped the World Test Championship table and are now all set to play the final at the Oval. Their opponents India have gotten the better of them in recent times. This time around it is a one-off match and that too at a neutral venue. Australia will be missing key bowler Josh Hazelwood who has been struggling with injuries. Michael Neser was added to the squad as his replacement but Hazelwood is likely to be fit for the Ashes. Pat Cummins has already confirmed that Scott Bolland will play the match so the rest of the line-up is pretty obvious.
Australia’s ideal playing XI:
Openers: Usman Khawaja & David Warner
There are doubts over Warner’s place due to his bad record in English conditions. However he is likely to get the nod but this may be his last chance as Australia may look at Marcus Harris for the Ashes if Warner doesn’t perform. Usman Khawaja has been incredible ever since his return to the side. His intent will be very crucial for Australia.
Middle order: Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith & Travis Head
The middle order is possibly Australia’s biggest strength. Steve Smith has a point to prove after being inconsistent for this WTC cycle. His record in England especially at the Oval is remarkable. Labuschagne on the other hand is the number 1 ranked batter in the world and will be a big threat for India. Travis Head is a player who will look to stamp his authority. If he bats for an hour then the game will swing in Australia’s favor because of his aggressive style.
All-rounder: Cameron Green
Green is coming into this match high on confidence after a very successful maiden IPL campaign. He has a lot of responsibility with the bat and some with the ball as well. Australia will be hoping that new conditions don’t become a problem for the big man.
Wicketkeeper: Alex Carey
Carey has done very well ever since he took over as the gloveman. He will however like to contribute more with the bat.
Spinner: Nathan Lyon
Nathan Lyon has continued to grow in stature during this cycle. He will be the main man for Australia due to his great record against India and in English conditions.
Seamers: Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc & Scott Bolland
Captain Cummins has already confirmed that Bolland will play in the absence of Hazelwood. The Aussie seamers in these conditions will be lethal but they have to avoid getting desperate like they have done against India in the past. The attack is pretty dynamic and versatile as all three seamers along with Green are different type of bowlers.
Bench: Marcus Harris, Josh Inglis, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser
Reserves: Mitch Marsh, Matt Renshaw
