(Football news) Chelsea’s season has been full of absolute chaos under new owner Todd Boehly. First they signed Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Gabriel Slonina, Carney Chukwuemeka, Marc Cucurella, Cesare Casadie, Wesley Fofana, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Zakaria in the summer transfer window. After a bad run of results manager Thomas Tuchel was sacked which was a complete shock. Graham Potter was appointed as a replacement but the results did not improve.

Now in January they managed to make another Enzo Fernandez, Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk, Andre Santos, Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana and Joao Felix on loan. The sale of Jorginho to Arsenal was the only significant one. Each team is only allowed to add 3 January signings to their UCL squad therefore Chelsea added Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez while Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, David Datro Fofana and Noni Madueke missed out. However to accommodate the additions one of the players had to be removed and that was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Graham Potter on the decision to remove Aubameyang from Chelsea’s UCL squad: “Pierre has done nothing wrong at all, no problem. It’s just unfortunate and Aubameyang will fight for his place until the rest of the season”.

Aubameyang was the captain of Arsenal but things changed when the striker was suspended for recurring disciplinary issues. He was subsequently sold to FC Barcelona in January 2022, where he tasted success but couldn’t win a trophy. In the summer Barcelona signed Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich. Lewandowski was always going to be the next talisman at the club. Barcelona also signed winger Raphinha which meant that Aubameyang’s opportunity will be limited. Thomas Tuchel who had worked with Aubameyang at Borussia Dortmund signed him for Chelsea.

Aubameyang just hasn’t hit the ground running and now with all the new signings coming in it looks like it will be difficult for him to get into the team. The positive for Aubameyang is that in the entire squad he is the only one who is a proper number 9. The issue for Graham Potter is that even after all these signings the results are not improving. Chelsea have won just 2 games after the World Cup and are currently 9th on the Premier League table.
