Atletico Madrid haven't won the Copa Del Rey since 2013

(Football news) Atletico Madrid are not having the best of seasons aa they have been knocked out of European football and are currently 4th on the La Liga table. It is worrisome for Diego Simeone and the board, more so considering that last season wasn’t too much of a success either. Despite recent reports, Simeone has said that he has no plans to leave and no one has asked him to leave. Atletico Madrid have already lost Joao Felix in this transfer window and they are in negotiations to sign Memphis Depay with Yannick Carrasco going the other way. That could be a game changing move as far as the rest of the season goes.

Atletico Madrid’s next challenge is the Copa Del Rey Round of 16 tie against 2nd division side Levante. The Rojiblancos will be looking to bounce back after their 1-1 draw against Almeria on the weekend. Yannick Carrasco is not available for the match due to a muscular problem while Jose Gimenez is a doubt. Diego Simeone started his strongest available XI for the last round against Real Oviedo and he is likely to do the same once again. Levante on the other hand could be without Sergio Postigo who will have a late fitness test. The 2nd division side are currently 3rd on the league table and unbeaten for 17 games in all competitions.

The Copa Del Rey could prove to be the saving grace for Diego Simeone and Atlético Madrid this season. They haven’t been in the best of forms throughout the season but there is still time to turn things around. Not having any European fixtures is a blessing in disguise and could help them in the long run as the season progresses. Diego Simeone is at the helm of things and if this is indeed his last season then he will want to leave on a high. Some reinforcements in January will also be needed to try and improve the squad which is definitely needed.
