(Football news) Atletico Madrid last weekend lost at home against Barcelona. Now they have drawn 1-0 against newly promoted Almeria. Diego Simeone started with Antoine Griezmann and Angel Correa up front now that Joao Felix is gone. Geoffrey Kondogbia and Koke started in midfield while World Cup winner Rodrigo de Paul is yet to play a single minute since the season has resumed. The suspended Stefan Savic was a big miss as was the injured Yannick Carrasco. Axel Witsel started as a centre back alongside Mario Hermosa.
The opening minutes were cagey but Atlético Madrid did manage to break the deadlock in the 18th minute. Kondogbia assisted Correa as the visitors took the lead. The game broke lose as both teams started getting regular chances. Almeria mamaged to get the equalizer in the 37th minute via El Bilal Toure. 5 minutes later the home side had another glorious chance but Jan Oblak intervened to make the save. Both teams has a lot of chances in the 2nd half but neither could score. Atletico’s night ended in dismay as substitute Sergio Reguilon got two yellow cards in the space of 4 minutes. Fortunately for Simeone the score remained 1-1 as Almeria could score past 10 men.
The pressure is on Simeone as last season wasn’t too successful either. Atletico Madrid finished rock bottom of their UCL group and are now 7 points behind 3rd place Real Sociedad. There are already rumors in Spain that this will be the Argentine’s last season which will be the right call. If this is indeed Simeone’s last season as Atletico Madrid’s manager then he will like to go out in a respectable manner in the top 4 and hopefully with a Copa Del Rey title. Their next match is a Cup fixture away at Levante.
