(Football news) Atletico Madrid's poor season keeps on getting worse. The defending La Liga champions are currently 16 points behind leaders Real Madrid in the league. They were knocked out of the Spanish Super Cup Semi final by Athletic Club and are now out of the Copa del Rey after losing 2-0 against Real Sociedad in the Round of 16.

Diego Simeone who usually lines up with two strikers up front started the game with the standard 4-3-3. Atletico Madrid were completely outplayed by La Real who scored a goal in each half to secure the victory. Joseba Zaldua setup Adnan Januzaj who's header in the 33rd minute gave Sociedad the lead. Just after the start of the 2nd half Alexander Sorloth robbed the ball from Felipe to double his side's lead. Atletico couldn't get a hold of the game and would've lost by as many as 5 goals if La Real were more clinical.

For the first time in a while Diego Simeone's position looks to be under threat. His sacking never looks like an option because he has been at the club for so long and has done a fantastic job but before him Atlético have always been a sacking club and it could be time for Atlético Madrid to move on. Their hopes of winning a trophy this season is very bleak. They are 16 points behind league leaders Real Madrid. They will face Manchester United in the UCL Round of 16. The Rojiblancos are not the favorites to win the UCL title. Getting a new manager can change things around for the better even though they just won the La Liga last season. Atletico's next game is against Valencia where they will start as the underdogs. La Real on the other hand will host Getafe in the league.
