Sri Lanka has announced their T20I squad to take on India in a 3-match series starting this Saturday (27th July). Charith Asalanka has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s T20I skipper. Asalanka will take over the reigns from Wanindu Hasaranga who stepped down as the captain after Sri Lanka’s early exit at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Sri Lanka had a forgettable campaign at the T20 World Cup 2024 and as expected there are some major changes to their side ahead of a big series against the World Champions. Veteran Angelo Mathews and the experienced Dhananjaya de Silva have been dropped from the squad and the likes of other senior players in Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Janith Perera have found a spot.
The 21-year-old uncapped Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Binura Fernando, and Avishka Fernando have also been added to the squad, while Sadeera Samarawickrama and Dilshan Madhushanka go out.
The Lankan Premier League has had an impact on the selection of the Sri Lankan side to some extent. Avishka was the highest run-getter amongst the Sri Lankan players at the LPL while Kusal Perera too impressed with a 296-run tally at a strike rate of 169. Left-arm seamer Binura Fernando picked up 13 wickets in eight outings and made his way into the national side.
