Michail Antonio becomes West Ham’s top Premier League goalscorer; helps club claim top spot in the process

(Football news) West Ham defeated Leicester City to go top of the table. Just two seasons ago West Ham were in a relegation battle under Manuel Pellegrini. David Moyes was given the task to keep West Ham in the top flight for the 2nd time after doing so in the 2018. This time around Moyes was given a longer contract and he has done much better than expected.

After successfully surviving relegation, in the very next season West Ham finished 6th in the league to qualify for the Europa League group stage for the first time in their history. The hammers started the new season in grand fashion with a 4-2 win over Newcastle.

West Ham started their 2nd game against Leicester City on the front foot. Pablo Fornals broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. Things turned massively in West Ham's favour when Ayoze Perez was shown a straight red card just before halftime. Said Benrahma doubled West Ham's lead in the 56th minute. The Hammers did lose concentration for a minute and conceded a goal from Youri Tielemans. Michail Antonio scored two late goals to seal the 3 points and take West Ham to the top of the table on goal difference.

In the opening game of the season against Newcastle, Michail Antonio equalled Paolo Di Canio's record of 47 Premier League goals for West Ham. Antonio's two goals against Leicester took him past the Italian. Antonio has worked his way through the ranks with The Irons. Since joining West Ham in 2015 the Englishman has played as a right back, right midfielder, winger and striker. It was only this season when he was given the number 9 shirt. Antonio has grinded it out to become the clubs first choice striker and he will be looking to extend his record in their next game against Crystal Palace.

The red card to Perez was the turning point of the match. Although Tielemans did pull a goal back to bring Leicester back into the game. West Ham used their man advantage to put the game to bed in no time. Brendon Rodgers' men travel to Norwich City next week in search of 3 points.
