(Football news) An eventful set of fixtures concluded yesterday in the third round of the Carabao Cup that saw Premier League side Everton crash out of the competition while Man City and Liverpool successfully progressed to the fourth round. The action continues with many Premier League heavyweights set to begin their campaign for the first silverware that’s awarded in the season.
Manchester United vs West Ham: 12:15 am IST, 23rd September 2021
Manchester United will take on West Ham, a repeat of the same fixture that happened on the weekend, except it will take place at Old Trafford. Both teams are expected to make changes with Jesse Lingard, who scored the winner against his former club last weekend, expected to start. Phil Jones is also set to be included in the squad for the first time since his 20 month injury layoff while Alex Telles is available for selection after recovering from an ankle injury. David De Gea is expected to be rested and either Dean Henderson or Tom Heaton could feature in the starting XI while Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Juan Mata, Donny Van De Beek, Anthony Martial, Diogo Dalot are also expected to be in the starting XI.
Solskjaer will be hoping to give the youngsters some much needed first team experience with the likes of Anthony Elanga, Teden Mengi, Hannibal Mejbri and Shola Shoretire in contention to make it to the squad. Edinson Cavani remains a doubt after a muscle strain while Amad Diallo (thigh) and Marcus Rashford (shoulder) are expected to remain sidelined. Meanwhile, Michail Antonio is back in contention for West Ham, having missed out on the weekend’s Premier League action but may be saved for the match against Leeds while Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola and midfielder Alex Kral could make their debuts. Manuel Lanzini, Mark Noble, Arthur Masuaku and Issa Diop are expected to feature in the match.
Chelsea vs Aston Villa: 12:15 am IST, 23rd September 2021
Champions of Europe Chelsea are set to face Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge in the third round of the Carabao Cup. Edouard Mendy is expected to be sidelined, having suffered a hip injury and remains doubtful for this weekend’s match against Manchester City as well. Christian Pulisic is also a doubt as the American has not fully recovered from an ankle injury. Thomas Tuchel is expected to make wholesale changes, especially considering that the Blues will face Man City next and Juventus midweek in the Champions League. Aston Villa is expected to feature their record signing Emi Buendia who was an unused substitute in last weekend’s 3-0 win over Everton. John McGinn is expected to be sidelined, having suffered from concussion while Leon Bailey has a quad injury.
Arsenal vs AFC Wimbledon: 12:15 am IST, 23rd September 2021
After enduring a torrid start to the season, Arsenal seem to have found their momentum and got back to winning ways, having won back to back Premier League matches against Norwich City and Burnley. The Gunners will be without Granit Xhaka who is serving the last of his three game ban after receiving a red card against Manchester City. Mikel Arteta has an almost fully fit squad at his disposal except for Mohamed Elneny, who is recovering from a hamstring injury. This is the first time the two sides will face each other in any competition and Arsenal are expected to be heavy favourites to progress to the next round.
Wolves vs Tottenham: 12:15 am IST, 23rd September 2021
In a clash between two Premier League tables, both Wolves and Tottenham will be hoping to get back to winning ways, having suffered losses in the Premier League last weekend. The likes of Fabio Silva, Leander Dendoncker, Hwang Hee-chan, Yerson Mosquera and John Ruddy are expected to feature for Wolves while Pedro Neto and Jonny remain long-term absentees.
A sprained ankle for Steven Bergwijn and a knock for Lucas Moura means both the players will be unavailable for selection while Defender Japhet Tanganga is back in contention after suspension. Nuno Espírito Santo is expected to make wholesale changes to the squad, keeping one eye on the weekend’s derby against arch rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
