Irish cricketer Gaby Lewis’ half century leads Ireland to victory

(Cricket news) A match-winning half-century from Gaby Lewis saw Ireland register a comprehensive win over the Netherlands and saw Ireland take a 2-0 series lead.

Lewis scored 52* from 29 balls and scored 11 boundaries in the process. She hit the ball over the ground and brought up her fifth career T20 half century.

During the last two matches against Scotland Gaby Lewis got out in her 40s and was determined to convert her starts today. Her knock today was all about timing and this was best exemplified by the last shot she played to get her half century, which was delightfully swept away off Frederique Overdijk balling over the square leg for four. Lewis was supported by Rebecca Stokell (17) and Laura Delany (15), as the Irish side quickly chased the target of 110 in just 11.3 overs.

After winning the toss the Dutch elected to bat, as they lost a wicket second ball when Orla Prendergast knocked back Freqerique Overdijk’s off stump. Prendergast struck in her second over and the dutch were struggling as they only made 16-2 in 5 overs.

Two more wickets fell and the visitors were in serious trouble as they were 51-4 in 12 overs. Enter Miranda Veringmeier and Juliet Post as the pair put on a brave partnership of 58 for the fifth wicket in 51 balls.During the partnership Veringmeier displayed power hitting whereas Juliet Post looked to rotate the strike and made sure the score kept ticking on. The pair showed great composure during their partnership – Veringmeier hitting two big sixes and 6 fours in her 60 from 50 balls. Her innings came to an end when she got caught off the last ball of the innings. She continued from the first match as she made 33 of 15 and was the only trouble that the Irish faced.

Prendergast and Sophie MacMahon both impressed with the ball as they had spells of 2-14 and 1-12 respectively, they both displayed disciplined line and length which caused the Dutch batsmen plenty of problems.

The two teams return to the same venue for the last match tomorrow with Ireland leading the four match series 2-0.
