Deepak Punia marches into the semifinals and keeps the hope of medal alive

(Wrestling news) Olympics 2020 live updates: The world championship silver medalist in the mens 86kg freestyle category started off his quest to win a medal in a dominant fashion as he made easy work of his opponent. The 22 year old looked in exquisite form as he showcased supreme defending skills against Nigeria’s Ekerekeme Agiomor and won the match by technical superiority 12-1.

In the quarterfinal it was a completely different story as it was a nail biting contest against Lin Zushen of China. Both the wrestlers were cancelling each other out as the scores were all tied up during the first half. However, Deepak Punia showed us why he is ranked world number 2, as in the dying seconds he produced a magnificent take down to win the match 6-3.

The Indian faces David Taylor of USA in the semifinals of the men's 86kg freestyle category.The only concern for Deepak would be his knee as he had heavy strapping on his left knee where opponents might take advantage of that. Deepak has a golden opportunity to equal Sushil Kumar’s feat and reach the final for only the second time in Olympic wrestling history for India.
