Women's Discus Throw qualification stages saw India’s Seema Punia in Group A and Kamalpreet Kaur in Group B in action in the Tokyo Olympics. In Group A, Seema Punia finished 6th and 16th overall with throws of 60.57m and 58.93m. In Group B, Kamalpreet Kaur put up a magnificent performance as she improved in every throw finishing second in her Group and also second overall to qualify for the finals. She started with a 60.29m, 63.97m and finished with a 64.00m. She is the national record holder with a throw of 66.59m and will look to carry on the form.

Vandana Katariya's hat-trick gives Indian women’s hockey team a chance at quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympics

Indian women’s hockey team defeated South Africa 4-3 to improve their chances of making it to the quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympics. The Indian team opened their scoring early in the game when Vandana Katariya found the back of the net in the fourth minute of play. However, South Africa equalized in the last minute of the first quarter and despite India challenging the goal with a review, the goal was given.

With just 10 minutes left to play, Vandana Katariya completed her hat-trick to give India a slender advantage and this time the defense did not give in to allow South Africa to score, resulting in India defeating South Africa 4-3 at the end of the match.

Sindhu loses in straight sets to Tai Tzu-ying but still has a chance to win bronze medal

It was heartbreaking as India’s PV Sindhu lost in the semifinals of the Women’s Badminton Singles in the Tokyo Olympics. Tai Tzu-ying from

Chinese Taipei is through to the finals against Chen Yufei from China tomorrow. She beat Sindhu 21-18,21-12 as the match got over in 40 minutes.

Atanu Das crashes out of Tokyo Olympics after losing pre-qualifier to Takaharu Furukawa 6-4

In a game of fine margins, Indian archer Atanu Das was knocked out of the men’s individual pre-qualifier by Japan’s Takaharu Furukawa. Despite very little to separate the two archers, Furukawa won the first set 27-25 after Atanu Das scored a 9 followed by two 8s. The Japanese archer then led after the second set ended up in a tie (28 each) resulting in a score of 3-1.

Atanu Das fought back in the third set, winning it 28-27 to level the scoring at 3-3 while the fourth set tied again at 28 each for the points to be split 4-4. What followed was a tight finish between the two archers but Takaharu Furukawa emerged victorious by extremely fine margins as he went on to progress into the quarter-finals by a score of 6-4.

Yuberjen Martinez Rivas knocks out Amit Panghal 4-1 in Men’s Flyweight Round of 16

In a disappointing boxing clash, India’s Amit Panghal lost 4-1 to Colombia’s Yuberjen Martinez Rivas at the Kokugikan Arena. Panghal off strongly, keeping his distance from Martinez and attacking the Colombian with his left hook and combinations. Panghal managed to defend and attack well and scoring punches helped him with the first round with a 4:1 decision.

However, Martinez upped his game for the second set, forcing Panghal to adopt a more defensive strategy under immense pressure. In a closer contest compared to Round 1, Martinez emerged the winner with a 4:1 decision. From then on, Martinez started Round 3 on a similar note as the second round, and did not allow Panghal to use his left hand. Martinez hit Pinghal with right-left combination punches with very little retaliation from Panghal’s side, who looked like he could barely move his arms, ultimately resulting in the Indian boxing losing the match.

Anjum and Tejaswini falter in the first hurdle in Women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions

Anjum Moudgil and Tejaswini Sawant failed to qualify for the finals of the Women's  50m Rifle 3 Positions  in the Tokyo Olympics. Anjum Moudgil finished 15th scoring 1167 with an average of 9.725 and Tejaswini Sawant finished 33rd scoring 1154 with an average of 9.617 in the qualification round.

Indian Sailors looking doubtful as only one more race to go

In the Men's Skiff 49er, Indian pair of Varun Thakkar and Kelapanda Ganapathy had their 10th, 11th and 12th race today in the Tokyo Olympics. They finished 16th in the 10th race, in the next race they jumped up 7 places by finishing 9th and in the last race of the day they ended up placed 14th. They are ranked 17th overall in the event after 12 races.

Indian boxer Pooja Rani loses 5-0 in the quarter-finals against Qian Li of China

Pooja Rani was outclassed by China’s Qian Li in the quarter-finals of the women's middleweight (75kg) division. The 30 year old boxer who has previously won a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games and a gold medal in the 2016 South Asian Games lost in both the rounds against the former World Champion Qian Li at her debut Olympic Games. Despite starting aggressively, Pooja could not connect her punches in the first round and Qian Li got 10-9 on all five scorecards.

The second round saw the Chinese boxer utterly dominate Pooja Rani who struggled to get her punches right and could not cope with Qian Li’s unrelenting attacks. The score ended in Qian Li’s favor as she got 10-9 on all five scorecards. The third round saw Qian Li keep her distance from Pooja Rani and land lethal blows whenever she got the opportunity. Soon enough, Pooja Rani lost the third round too and Qian Li progressed to the next round effortlessly.

Long jumper M Sreeshankar out of the running for Olympics medal

The Olympic Games campaign of 22-year-old Murali Sreeshankar has come to an end after he managed 7.69 and 7.51 in his first two attempts and only 7.43m in his final attempt with 8.15m being the direct qualification mark.

The world number 38 got off to a good start, to say the least. In his first effort, he got a distance of 7.69 (+0.1). Sreeshankar was unable to better that distance on his second effort, which was 7.51 metres (-0.2).

India’s Fouaad Mirza ends dressage in ninth position on the leaderboard at the Tokyo Olympics

Indian equestrian Fouaad Mirza and his horse Seigneur Medicott finished the dressage stage in ninth position at the Tokyo Olympics. Mirza had accumulated 28.00 penalty points on Friday, tied seventh to Sweden's Louise Romeike and her horse Cato.

Fouaad Mirza’s next event will be Cross Country, scheduled for August 4th at 4:15 am where the horses will move to Sea Forest Cross-Country Course.
