17 years since Manchester United signed an 18-year-old Wayne Rooney from Everton

(Football news) Manchester United is the most followed club in the world. 'The Theatre of Dreams' has showcased some of the world's most talented footballers in the world. The club has had many legends over its rich history. George Best, Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs the list goes on and on. One of the legends, Cristiano Ronaldo, has recently made the headlines after his emotional return to Old Trafford.

In the illustrious history of the club the standout player has to be Wayne Rooney. On 31st August 2004 Manchester United signed the 18-year-old Rooney from Everton amidst interest from Chelsea and Newcastle United. Rooney at a very young age had made quite an impact at Everton.

At Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson Rooney burst onto the scene on another level. The striker became the 2nd youngest player to score 20 Premier League goals. He formed a formidable partnership with Louis Saha up front. The English striker along with Cristiano Ronaldo ruled the Premier League while at Old Trafford.

He became Manchester United's all time top goalscorer with 253 goals. In his illustrious 13 year career at Old Trafford, Rooney won a total of 16 major titles. His Manchester United career ended in 2018 when he joined MLS club DC United. Rooney played as a striker for the majority of his career but later had to be deployed as a false 9 and a number 10 before finally becoming a midfielder. He had successful strike partnerships with Louis Saha, Dimitar Berbatov, Carlos Tevez and Robin Van Persie.

Wayne Rooney has a very big legacy with Manchester United. All his teammates left or retired but Rooney stayed all along. He played with 2 or 3 different generations of Manchester United players. It was a good ride but it had its own bumps on the way. Rooney had a few controversies in his career, most notably transfer links with Chelsea every now and then. The Englishman had publicly expressed desires to leave Manchester United for Chelsea but never did.

Rooney came to Manchester United as a youngster with potential and left as the club captain and all time top goalscorer. Now at the age of 35 Rooney has hung up his playing boots and serves as the manager of Derby County in the Championship.
