(Football news) After an incredible 2021/22 season, Real Madrid signed Antonio Rudiger for free to bolster their defence. The signing is definitely exciting because it will create competition within the team. Last season, right wing was the only place which had some competition whereas all the other positions had a clear candidate. Now Real Madrid have the option of Rudiger, David Alaba and Eder Militao to play at centre back. Alaba can also play at left back while Ferland Mendy is the other option. Real Madrid essentially have to fit 3 spots with 4 options which gives Carlo Ancelotti room to experiment on what is the best option for certain teams.
However recent reports from Spain claim that Real Madrid plan to use Alaba exclusively as left back and will listen to offers for Ferland Mendy. Just when Real Madrid had a chance to have depth and competition in the squad it looks like it will not be the case. Selling Mendy on a permanent basis could prove to be a very big mistake. The Frenchman has been putting in good performances ever since his move to Real Madrid. At the age of 27, Mendy is at the prime of his career and is likely to perform at the top level for another 5 years or so. He managed to bench Marcelo after just one season at the club which shows what an incredible signing he has been for the club.
The likelihood is that unless the Merengues get a very big offer they will keep Mendy at the club because the player doesn't want to leave. Real Madrid will definitely want more than the €53 million (with add-ons) they spent on him back in 2019. As of now there are no clubs linked with Mendy but there definitely will be if the reports are true. Defensively Mendy is one of the best full backs in the world and there are very few players that can out pace him. The downside to playing him as a fullback is that he doesn't contribute much while attacking which is a problem against teams that sit back and defend. There is still a long time till the transfer window closes therefore anything is a possibility.
