Arachas Super 50 Cup: Scorchers claim title with a dominating 105 run victory over Typhoons

DUBLIN – Half-centuries by Gaby Lewis and  Shauna Kavanagh powered Scorchers to the Arachas Super 50 Cup title 4-1 at Pembroke Cricket Club on Sunday.

With Typhoons skipper Laura Delany having to pull out from the game before play, the Scorchers won the toss and elected to bat first. Gaby Lewis carried onto her purple patch with the bat – following up last week’s 115 with 56 off 54 balls in this game, which featured 10 boundaries. She concluded the 50-over competition this year scoring 276 runs at an average of 69.00, with a strike rate of 91.39.

Lewis and Leah Paul (29) amassed 87 runs for the opening wicket in 16 overs, as the Scorchers looked to wrap up the Cup competition on a high. After both were dismissed in successive overs, Lara Maritz (16) and Shauna Kavanagh (53) continued to add runs with a 41-run partnership for the third wicket.

Kavanagh scored her first half-century of the Cup in 2021 off 77 balls, looking tough throughout, using power packed sweep shots to the spinners and majorly hitting square of the wicket. Kavanagh also built four crucial partnerships of 41, 24, 34 and 22 ensuring the Scorchers middle-order does not lose the momentum during tricky middle overs.

Jenny Sparrow (14), Sophie MacMahon (18) and Cara Murray (19*) contributed runs down the order, and the Scorchers finished their innings on an impressive total of 241-9 from their 50 overs.

For the Typhoons, Raack (2-41) and Ava Canning (2-52) claimed two wickets each.Despite remaining wicket less, Orla Prendergast once again bowled beautifully with pace and consistency, finishing with 0-18 from 6 overs.

In reply, the Typhoons lost the wickets of Rachel Delaney, who ran out for a duck and Louise Little (2) who was caught by a diving catch from Maritz at cover.

Prendergast sparkled briefly with the bat for 22, but wicket kept falling as the Scorchers bowlers kept dominating the batting side. Stand-in skipper Celeste Raack hit an impressive 42. However the tail did not provide any support , with the Typhoons losing 5-41 off 13 overs to be all out for 136.

For the Scorchers, Ashlee King was impressive with the ball with figures of 3-13 from 5 overs, well supported by MacMahon (2-18) and Cara Murray (2-31).

The Scorchers have clinched the 2021 Arachas Super 50 Cup title with a clinical 4-1 win.

The teams will regroup and move back into the T20 competition with the second Super 20 Trophy game of the season next Sunday.
