(Football news) Andreas Pereira leaves Manchester United to join Brazilian club Flamengo as the club has reportedly agreed a deal to sell Andreas Pereira to Flamengo for £12million. The 26 year old has been on loan at Flamengo since last August, and has since made 25 appearances while scoring five goals. He is now set to permanently depart Old Trafford which is going to subsequently put an end to an 11-year spell with the Red Devils.
Manchester United will receive bonuses for 75% of Pereira’s rights on top of the £12million transfer fee. Flamengo have always been keen to secure the permanent signing of the 26-year-old despite his error in the Copa Libertadores final which cost them the trophy against Palmeiras. Despite Pereira’s mistake in the Copa Libertadores final where his heavy touch in extra-time allowed Deyverson to snatch possession and slot the ball past Diego Alves, making it 2-1 in the dying minutes. He joined United at the tender age of 15 and made his senior debut in a League Cup match where they suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to MK Dons in August 2014. After his mildly successful loan spells in La Liga with Granada and Valencia, in the 2018-19 season he started becoming a more regular fixture at Old Trafford.
Pereira had also won the club’s goal of the season award that year for his goal against Southampton, having scored from outside of the box. In total, he has one-cap for Brazil and has made 75 appearances for United in all competitions, he went on to make 75 appearances across eight seasons at the club and briefly looked like he might become an important part of the squad under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, making 40 appearances in all competitions in the 2019-20 season. When Ole just took over he became a regular in the starting line up and played in his favoured number 10 position but ever since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes he fell down the pecking order.
Andreas will be hoping that a new start in Brazil can uplift his career as this season he already has 25 plus appearances for Flamengo and has become an integral clog in the team. Pereira can take inspiration from his club teammate Gabriel Barbosa who had the same career trajectory as him but after his failed move to Inter he came back to Brazil and now has become a regular in the Brazilian national team. He was a standout player at academy level and quickly caught the eye of United fans. After making his debut under Louis van Gaal, he was sent out on loan by Jose Mourinho to Granada and then Valencia as his best moments in a United shirt came over the years largely came in pre-season, but he did start in the famous win away at PSG.
