Algeria Rises in FIFA Women’s Rankings

According to the federation’s announcement on Thursday, the Algerian women’s national football team has advanced one spot to take 83rd place in the most recent FIFA global rankings.  The United States leads the rankings, with Spain coming in second.

With 1264.4 points and a spot in the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON), Algeria has risen two spots since the prior ranking and is currently ranked 10th in the continent.  South Africa (54th), Zambia (64th), Ghana (65th), Cameroon (66th), Ivory Coast (71st), Mali (78th), Senegal (82nd), and Nigeria (36th in the world) have overtaken them.

Following a round of qualifying matches for the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, notable changes in the March rankings mostly took place in Africa.  Due to their respective playoff triumphs over Equatorial Guinea and Tunisia, Tanzania and Kenya both moved up seven spots, making them the most improved countries over the past two months.  Kenya is currently rated 149th, and Tanzania is currently ranked 145th.  On the other hand, following their defeat by Kenya, Tunisia saw a sharp dip, dropping 11 spots—the biggest drop—to 89th place.  Meanwhile, Djibouti has entered the FIFA rankings for the first time.

The top two teams in the FIFA women’s global rankings are still the United States and Spain, the winners of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.  Japan’s recent success in the SheBelieves Cup has brought them closer to the elite division.  Japan has moved up three spots to fifth place in the world rankings after defeating the United States, the host country of this four-team international competition, 2-1.  For the first time since December 2015, the Nadeshiko have made it into the world’s top five. This is a remarkable comeback for a team that had been outside the top 10 for over two years, from August 2021 to June 2023.  On June 12, 2025, the FIFA women’s world rankings will be announced.
