Alexander Zverev reaches round of 16 for the first time in five years at Indian Wells, Leylah Fernandez falls to Shelby Rogers

(Tennis news) In men’s singles, Alexander Zverev beat Andy Murray in a highly anticipated clash which lived up to its potential. Zverev was down to 1-4 in the first set until he took the next five games to disrupt Murray’s form and in the next set there were certain rallies where Murray was clearly the better player. A tiebreaker was needed where Zverev pulled ahead of Murray and there was a nerve wrecking volley competition at the net in which Zverev secured victory as Murray threw his racquet which showed the intensity of the match. Zverev defeated Murray 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

 

Stefanos Tsitsipas is enjoying his best performance at the Indian Wells in his third appearance at the event. Tsitsipas beat Fabio Fognini for the third time in as many matches as the Italian took a set off Tsitsipas for the first time. Fognini took advantage in the first set as the Greek player was playing with too many unforced errors but in the next two sets, Tsitsipas improved his game as he held up his fist multiple times in celebration. Tsitsipas defeated Fognini 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

 

Gael Monfils is slowly finding his form as he beat Kevin Anderson for the 6th time in 7 meetings. Monfils was hitting powerful forehands as Anderson could only marvel at the Frenchman's physical supremacy. Monfils won the first set in an hour and then took the second one in 39 minutes to enter the fourth round at Indian Wells. Monfils defeated Anderson 6-4, 6-2.

 

In women’s singles, Shelby Rogers could not play any better as she stormed into the quarterfinals for the first time at Indian Wells by beating Leylah Annie Fernandez in a nail biting three setter. Leylah took the first set as she displayed strength and consistency in the rallies but in the next two sets Rogers just played better than Leylah, Leylah even saved a matchpoint in the second set but Rogers delivered a masterclass performance. Rogers defeated Leylah 2-6. 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

 

Paula Badosa defeated French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets to enter the last eight. Paula took the first set without much trouble but in the second set Barbora saved a matchpoint but that was not enough as Paula won the match to record her second victory over Barbora in their second meeting. Paula defeated Barbora 6-1, 7-5.

 

Victoria Azarenka put an end to Aliaksandra Sasnovich's fairytale run at the Indian Wells with a thumping win. Aliaksandra had defeated Simona Halep and Emma Raducanu in her previous two matches but had no chance against the former champion. Azarenka won the match at the expense of seven games as Aliaksandra had not dropped a set yet but could not win more than four games in a set against Azarenka. Azarenka defeated Aliaksandra 6-3, 6-4.

 

In men’s doubles, Rohan Bopanna and Denis Shapovalov won their fourth round encounter against the German pair of Alexander Zverev and Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets. Bopanna and Shapovalov defeated 7-5, 6-3. Top seeds Mate Pavić and Nikola Mektić took no time in entering the quarterfinals as they defeated Matwé Middelkoop and Marcelo Arévalo 6-1, 6-3.

 

In women’s doubles, top seeds Kateřina Siniaková and Barbora Krejcikova lost to Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jeļena Ostapenko in a close encounter. Both pairs took a set each in commanding fashion but in the third set Jeļena and Kichenok played well under pressure. Lyudmyla and Jeļena defeated Kateřina and Barbora 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.

 

Cori Gauff and Leylah Fernandez’s run came to an end as they could not overcome second seeded Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens. Hsieh and Elise defeated Cori and Leylah 7-5, 6-4.
