Asian football officials expressed their “serious” consideration of Bahrain’s worries on Friday, following the nation’s attempt to have a World Cup qualifier shifted from Indonesia due to purported death threats.

In March, Bahrain will travel to play Indonesia in the pivotal third round of Asian qualifying for the North American 2026 World Cup.

Last week’s match ended in a 2-2 draw, with Bahrain, the host nation, tying the score in the ninth minute of injury time.

Later, proponents and officials in Indonesia expressed vehement complaints that the extra time had continued for too long.

In order to “maintain the safety of the team,” the Bahrain Football Association (BFA) announced this week that it will request that the rematch be played outside of Indonesia.

The BFA claimed that online, Bahrain’s players had been “subjected to a torrent of insults, slander, threats and hacking operations.”

The Bahraini team would be secure, according to Indonesia’s FA.

“Aware of the concerns,” declared the Asian Football Confederation.

“The AFC condemns all forms of online abuse and threats and takes these concerns seriously. It is fully committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all players, officials, and fans.” The statement read.

“To ensure a safe and secure environment for all parties involved in the match, the AFC will continue to discuss the matter with FIFA, the BFA, and the Football Association of Indonesia,” it stated.
