Milan knocked out of Coppa Italia by 10-man Torino
Michel Ndary Adopo of Torino FC celebrates with teammates after scoring the team's first goal during the Coppa Italia match between AC Milan and Torino FC at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza

(Football news) A late goal by Torino midfielder Ndary Adopo earned a shock 1-0 win over defending Serie A champions AC Milan for 10 man Torino after extra time in their Coppa Italia last-16 clash on Wednesday. Torino went down to 10 men in the 69th minute when defender Koffi Djidji received a second yellow card for a challenge on Milan substitute Junior Messias which resulted in them playing with a man less for the majority of the match.

With the game looking very certain to go to penalties, Adopo shocked everyone when he wrapped up the victory for Torino in the 114th minute with a close-range strike into the bottom corner to stun the Milan fans in the San Siro. Torino, who have subsequently won the Italian Cup five times but not since 1993, joined local rivals Inter in the last eight after Simone Inzaghi’s side produced a clinical performance to advance with a 2-1 comeback win over Parma on Tuesday.

In the next month’s quarter-finals Torino is either going to face Sampdoria or Fiorentina who face off each other on Thursday. On the other hand, Roma hosts Genoa in Thursday’s late match while the remaining four matches are scheduled for next week. Defeat for Milan meant that they are on a string of two back to back bad results although they started with a second string line-up. For Pioli’s side it comes after they threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Roma on Sunday.

The draw allowed Napoli to extend their lead over the Italian champion at the top of Serie A to seven points. Stefano Pioli’s side looked very tired as they rattled off 32 shots over the course of the match but managed only eight on target, of which just three were taken from inside the area. Now Milan travel to Lecce in Serie A on Saturday after Napoli host Juventus, who are level on points with Milan. Inter also needed extra time to progress as Acerbis’ goal was enough for them to take a 2-1 win over Parma and qualify for the quarter finals.
