(Football news) Julen Lopetegui is all set to become the new Wolves manager after a period of consideration. The former Spanish coach was sacked as Sevilla manager in early October after just one win in their opening ten games. On the other hand, Bruno Lage was removed as Wolves manager and Lopetegui was favourite to take over the vacant job.
However Lopetegui initially told Wolves that he could not take the job, even though he liked the project. The former Spain and Real Madrid coach was apparently burnt out by an exhausting nine months at the Andalusialian club and also his father was seriously ill, making it impossible for him to leave the country on a permanent basis. That was several weeks ago but Wolves‘ hunt for a new manager has been disastrous and Steve Davis still remains in charge as the interim coach. According to Spanish reports, Lopetegui’s father finds himself in much better health and in fact has inspired Lopetegui to seize the opportunity and get back into management. Negotiations are underway and a deal is expected to be done this week.
It will no doubt help Wolves that Julen Lopetegui has been able to spend some time with his family after a tense end to his season with Sevilla. Wolves are getting a manager that will look to immediately improve their fortunes. Since taking over Sevilla in 2019, Lopetegui has gone on to add to their collection of Europa Leagues in his first season and went to secure three top four finishes in a row which subsequently was their best run since the 1960s. His style of Intense and organise football which is based on the success of a solid defence and managed so many accolades with Sevilla without a prolific striker.
Should Lopetegui agree to make the switch to Molineux, it would be a massive coup for them not only because they tried to land him before but also because his track record is very impressive. The Spaniard has won 90 matches and drawn 44 of his 170 matches in charge at Sevilla he averaged 1.85 points per match, and also led his side to an European trophy in 2019/20. That is exactly the level of consistency that Wolves need to bring to the club after a dismal start to the season, and the sooner he’s hired, the more chance he’ll have of turning Wolves’ fortunes in the Premier League.
