(Football news) With the transfer window shut many clubs made big moves on deadline day. While not exactly a frenzy of massive deals took place but the 2022 summer transfer deadline day still saw plenty of drama as hundreds of players moved to different clubs across Europe on Thursday. Many big deals were made earlier in the window, but there were still some jaw-dropping transfers which were finalized on the final day. Let us take a look at those deadline day moves
Dennis Zakaria (Juventus to Chelsea loan move)
Having only signed Zakaria on a free transfer from Monchengladbach in January, this move clearly didn’t work out for the Swiss international. However, a loan move came out of nowhere, but if he performs well then there is an option to sign permanently which stands at €35m, so if that happens then Juve would make a profit. An injury to N'Golo Kante pushed Chelsea into the market for a midfielder and Zakaria should be a decent addition considering his experience. Then again you have to wonder how much the club really wanted him given how late they waited in the window to sign him.
Daniel James (Leeds to Fulham loan move)
Daniel James completed a loan move to Fulham as the Cottagers were busy on deadline day, having already done deals for Willian on a free transfer, Layvin Kurzawa on a season-long loan and Vinicius for a fee of £9.5m. James moved to Leeds from Manchester United on deadline day in last summer’s transfer window and the 24-year-old played 32 league games for Leeds last season and scored four goals. Silva has been looking in the market to provide support for star man Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is in strong form this season and James can hopefully provide that given his experience. Till now he has struggled to really make his mark and prove his worth, so he will be hoping he can make it third time lucky with Fulham.
Carlos Soler (Valencia to PSG for €18m)
Soler has been linked with so many clubs over the past transfer windows for twice the transfer fee over recent windows and PSG getting him for a mere €18m for a player who is 25-year-old with a high ceiling. Much like the deal for Fabian Ruiz, Luis Campos and co have taken advantage of a contract expiring in 2023 to seal a cheap move. Soler is a talented player who was already Valencia’s captain and Spanish international but he still might struggle to break through a squad packed PSG squad. This season PSG went for bargain buys which will complement their big stars upfront as the likes of Renato Sanches, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz and Carlos Soler already look like good signings on paper in the midfield.
Umar Sadiq ( Almeria to Real Sociedad for €20)
Real Sociedad completed the signing of Nigerian forward Umar Sadiq from UD Almeria as the deal is set to be worth €20 million euros plus €6 millions in add ons on a five-year contract. The club announced the signing on Thursday. Sadiq underwent his medicals and he is set to replace Alexander Isak who left Sociedad for Newcastle this summer for a record fee. Villareal were heavily interested in the lanky forward but could not meet the asking price of Almeria. Sadiq last season helped Almeria secure promotion to La Liga and for the second consecutive seasons he was their leading goalscorer.
Julian Draxler (PSG to Benfica on loan)
Julian Draxler joined Portuguese side Benfica on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. The deal is set to cost Benfica €2.5m without an option to buy the player. The German international has always been surplus to requirements by the club’s new management. However, no team showed interest in him until now as Newcastle were one club to speak to the player’s entourage over a move last month but discussions came to nothing. Since his move to PSG from Wolfsburg in January 2017 for a fee of around €35m, Draxler has gone on to play 198 games for them, scoring 26 goals and providing 41 assists across all competitions.
