(Football news) Jan Oblak is set to renew his contract with Atlético Madrid till 2028. Slovenia's current contract expires in the summer of 2023, but negotiations have been underway for months and it looks like he is set to sign a contract extension. Oblak is 29 and wants to stay in the Spanish capital, while Diego Simeone knows what a key player he is in his squad. The extension runs until 2028, and the veteran goalkeeper will maintain his current salary. Fabrizio Romano reported that Oblak will receive a salary increase which is expected to be up to €10 million net per year to €12 million on a contract that expires in 2025.
Oblak is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world until a dip in form that had some experts questioning his credentials last season. Atlético switched between a back three and a back four last season as they struggled defensively. Oblak’s 12 clean sheets in 2021-22 was his lowest total since joining the club while Atletico conceded 43 goals in the La Liga which was subsequently the highest total in a red and white shirt. The new contract is a symbol of the confidence that Oblak will return to his best form. Oblak has made 352 appearances for Atlético since joining from Benfica in 2014 for €16 million. The new deal means that he will spend more than a decade at the club and it’s set to be announced next week.
Diego Simeone has to come up with creative solutions for the right-back position since the departure of Kieran Trippier to Newcastle United. But now, he is set to sign Argentine right back Nahuel Molina from Udinese. The La Liga side has achieved a breakthrough in negotiations with Udinese and Molina is expected to travel to Madrid for his medical as Atletico Madrid want to make the deal official by this week. The right-back has earned 16 caps for the Argentina national team and has made 68 appearances for Udinese, scoring ten goals and providing ten assists. At 24, Simeone will be working with a player who is entering his prime and considering his ability to attack as well as defend, he will no doubt be a very important player for the club in the future.
Jan Oblak is the second active player with the most appearances after Koke, who is now only eight games from equaling Adelardo at the top (553) for making the most appearances for Atletico. If Oblak continues to play like this then he can close in on the 483 matches that Tomás played for the Los Rojiblancos. He is also getting closer to becoming the foreigner who has played most games in an Atlético shirt as Godín has 35 games over him and if nothing unusual happens, he will manage to overtake the great Uruguayan .
