Is Mauricio Pochettino the right man to take Manchester United forward?

(Football news) Manchester United have had a rollercoaster of a season and there is still a lot left to come before the start of next season. At the start of the season Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was supposedly given the tools to turn Manchester United into title challengers again. The Red Devils signed Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and brought back Cristiano Ronaldo.

Unfortunately things didn't turn out so well as Solskjaer was sacked in November. Manchester United's plan to appoint a new manager was complicated to say the least. Michael Carrick was appointed as the caretaker manager for the next 3 games after which the board appointed Ralf Rangnick as the interim manager until the end of the season. The plan is that after Rangnick's managerial term ends, he will continue at the club in a consultancy role for 2 years. A new manager will be appointed at the start of next season.

Rangnick has said that he might advise the board to continue with him as he has done in the past with other clubs. Manchester United haven't made any signings in January because they want any new player to come with consultation of the permanent manager which isn't decided yet which is also the reason why Anthony Martial and Donny Van de Beek's loan moves do not have options to buy. The recurring name in potential candidates is Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine has been linked with the Manchester United job in the past as well but it has never materialised.

Reports in France also suggest that the PSG board has already informed Pochettino that he wouldn't continue as a manager after the current season ends. Pochettino is the front runner for the United job but is he the right choice? The Argentine had good periods with Espanyol, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur but never won a trophy. Now at PSG he has a star studded squad but the team isn't as good as it has looked on paper which comes down to the manager.

PSG have failed to win the 2021 Ligue 1 and UCL under Pochettino. They also lost the Champions Cup at the beginning of this season. Now they have been knocked out of the Coupe de France Round of 16 despite playing Lionel Messi for 120 minutes and bringing on Kylian Mbappe in the 64th minute. To take Manchester United to the next level where they can compete for titles, they need someone who is a proven winner which Pochettino most certainly is not.
