(Football news) Athletic Club comeback from a goal down to win 3-2 in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid. The Basque club completely exposed Atletico's weakness of defending set pieces to score both their goals. Diego Simeone decided to bench Luis Suarez and started with Joao Felix and Angel Correa up front. Marcelino on the other hand didn't start Raul Garcia.
The first half was pretty even with both the teams getting good chances to score. Joao Felix scored from an offside position and also had a shot saved. Inaki Williams' also had a shot saved by Jan Oblak in the 1st half. The deadlock wasn't broken until the 62nd minute when Joao Felix rose highest from a corner to head the ball goalwards. The header should've been saved but Unai Simon fumbled it into the goal and it was registered as an own goal.
Marcelino responded with 4 substitutions in quick succession. The changes had an immediate impact as Yeray Alvares scored from Iker Muniain's corner. Four minutes later substitute Nico Willliams scored a volley after a corner scuffle. The Athletic Club managed to turn it around in grand fashion. Simone brought some fresh legs on but his side couldn't create a clear goalscoring opportunity. Hope was completely lost when Jose Gimenez was sent off for kicking Inigo Martinez in the face.
Athletic Club now have a chance to win back to back Super Cups. They will have 24 hours less than their opponents Real Madrid to rest and prepare for the game. They have the advantage because Real Madrid have played 30 minutes more than them as their game went into extra time.
