Afghanistan defeat Scotland by 130 runs at the T20 World Cup

(Cricket news) After defeating Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea and Oman, Scotland’s unbeaten run at the T20 World Cup came to an end after Afghanistan reduced them to only 60 runs in 10.2 overs after posting 190/4 earlier in the day. Mujeeb Ur Rahman (5-20) took three wickets in the fourth over, dismissing Kyle Coetzer (10), Calum MacLeod and Richie Berrington (0) as wickets began to fall like dominoes for Scotland.

With the score at 28-0 when Mujeeb Ur Rahman was unleashed, the next seven overs saw Scotland score only 32 runs for all out with the last man Brad Wheal getting out for a duck, becoming the fifth Scotland player to do so. Afghanistan’s batting performance was equally impressive, posting the highest score of the T20 World Cup so far with Najibullah Zadran (59 runs off 34) scoring the biggest six of the tournament so far (103 metres) over long-on.

If that wasn’t all, Hazratullah Zazai (44 runs off 30) hit a 101 metre six of his own while Rahmanullah Gurbaz (46 runs off 37), Mohammad Shahzad (22 runs off 15) and Mohammad Nabi (11* off four balls) also displayed impressive performances with the team scoring 11 sixes and 14 fours. Zazai’s partnership with Shahzad yielded 55 runs while Najibullah and Rahmanullah scored 87 runs from 52 balls.

Shahzad also had an impressive performance as a wicketkeeper, being responsible for the wicket of Matthew Cross (0) with a brilliant catch. Scotland’s batters at no. 3,4,5 and 6 were all dismissed without scoring a single run as only George Munsey scored 25 runs off 18 balls. Scotland will next face Namibia on Wednesday at Abu Dhabi while Afghanistan will face neighbours Pakistan on Friday in Dubai.
