(Motorsport news) Williams’ new eco-friendly strategy is set to be the ‘pace setter in global motorsport’ as the team have pledged to become ‘climate positive’ by 2030 and have also become the first Formula 1 team to sign the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework.
With Formula 1 already aiming to achieve net zero-carbon footprint by 2030, Williams’ aim to become ‘climate positive’ focuses on removing excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As part of its sustainability strategy, Williams lists five pillars that include reduction of carbon emissions while travelling, preserving biodiversity of Williams’ 60-acre campus, sustainable innovation such as lifecycle management of racing cars, providing access to the sport for all and becoming a pace setter in these areas. Williams have teamed up with specialist sustainability agency Enovation Consulting to achieve their goals.
Williams Chief Executive Jost Capito said “We have taken time to thoroughly analyse our entire operation and develop a comprehensive purpose-driven sustainability strategy to accelerate our sustainable transformation. So today we are making the commitment to be climate positive by 2030 and we will be using our knowledge to nurture and develop advanced technology to meet this goal.
“Formula 1 has the power to inspire millions across the world. As the pinnacle of so many advanced technologies, it can also create technical solutions to help tackle the challenges we face. My hope is that Williams Racing can inspire all those connected with our sport and beyond, using motorsport as a catalyst for significant and long-lasting change”, said Capito.
The move by Williams is a step in the right direction to demonstrate that Formula 1 can remain viable in the distant future. It also opens up the possibility that the most premier motorsport event in the world can become as sustainable, if not more so, than Formula E. Williams Racing has already achieved FIA three star environmental accreditation, an achievement in itself for the British motorsport team.
