England stunned by Poland as Italy and Germany cruise past their opponents

(Football news) As the last set of international matches went ahead a lot of drama and enthralling football was on display. With the players returning to their respective clubs after matchweek 6 teams like Italy and Germany maintained their position at the top of their group, although England fluttered they too looked in good position to qualify.

England played a entertaining 1-1 draw against Poland in Warsaw, Gareth Southgate’s side were not at their usual ruthless best as they were put on the back foot by Robert Lewandowski in the first half but in the second half a brilliant shot which curled in the far corner from Harry Kane gave England the lead. It was looking like the three lions were going to maintain their perfect record but in the second minute of stoppage time, substitute Szymanski rose well at the back post to nod in a floated cross from Lewandowski as it helped keep Poland their hopes of qualification alive. With this result, England are still in a commanding position in the group as they have 16 points from 6 matches, with Albania in second with 12 points and Poland in third with 11 points.

Newly crowned European champions Italy won 5-0 against Lithuania in what was a dominant performance from the Gil Azzurri. Robert Mancini’s side created history as they now have the longest unbeaten streak for an international team, now standing at 37 games unbeaten. Mancini made a lot of changes as he wanted to give youngsters the opportunity to shine, which they did as within the first 30 minutes Italy scored 4 goals courtesy of two goals from Moise Kean and Giacomo Raspadori. Eventually Italy cruised to a 5-0 victory which helped them maintain top position in Group C with 14 points from 6 matches followed by Switzerland with 8 points.

Germany won 4-0 against Iceland as they further extended their lead in the group. Hansi Flick’s side opened the scoring just after six minutes when Leroy Sane crossed perfectly for Serge Gnabry to convert from close range. Antonio Rudiger doubled their lead with a towering header, before Leroy Sane and Timo Werner put the finishing touches in what was a very convincing performance from the Germans. After this victory Germany extended their lead to 15 points from 6 matches followed by Armenia in second with 8 points.

Spain also won 2-0 against Kosovo to get back to winning ways after a disappointing loss to Sweden. Luis Enrique handed Pablo Fornals his first start after a long time which paid dividence as he scored his first goal in Spanish colours, Ferran Torres scored late on to give Spain a much deserved victory. Sweden were shocked by Greece as they lost 2-1 as goals from Bakasetas and Pavlidis helped keep their dream of qualifying for the World Cup alive.With these results Spain now have 13 points from 6 matches followed by Sweden in second with 9 points from 4 matches in Group B
