The Argentine sensation Lionel Messi has vowed to “come back stronger” in 2025 and is still intent on enjoying MLS Cup triumph at Inter Miami.
The most decorated player in history, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, increased his record-breaking trophy collection to 46 in 2024 when he helped the Herons achieve a historic Supporters’ Shield victory and his country win another Copa America championship.’
Messi’s 20 goals and 16 assists helped Inter Miami set a new single-season points record in the MLS, but the team’s three-game series against Atlanta United ended in play-off agony. It won’t be until February 2025 when they compete again.
Messi, who will be entering the last year of his contract for that campaign, has stated on social media that he is still totally dedicated to winning big cups in Florida: “A season concluded in which we continued to grow as a club and, although we achieved some goals, we wanted more… We are grateful to everyone who came and helped. Let us now prepare to return with greater vigor the next year.”
When asked about Messi’s long-term prospects, Herons manager Tata Martino told reporters, “I actually don’t know how limited [Messi’s time in this league] is.” Messi does have the option of a 12-month extension in his Inter Miami contract. Although time is passing, I wouldn’t dare claim that it is so short.
Miami’s fans will be hoping that Messi’s determination will be the key to delivering the coveted MLS Cup and another chapter in his storied career.
