Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has instructed the team not to sign a new pivot midfielder in the forthcoming January transfer window, as was previously reported.

There were rumors that the Blaugrana may look to trade for a replacement when Marc Bernal suffered a season-ending ACL injury early in the season, but the management has called off any such activity.

Flick thinks Bernal is a generational talent who will recover from his injury and that the present midfield alternatives—Marc Casado, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, and stopgap possibilities like Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen—can all play well.

Deco had his eye on the Chelsea duo.

But even before Flick made his choice, Barcelona was looking for possible winter midfield additions.

Additionally, Deco, the sporting director for the Blaugrana, reportedly has his sights set on two Chelsea youngsters as potential additions, according to a report from SPORT.

Actually, Deco was thinking about loaning Romeo Lavia and Carney Chukwuemeka, two Chelsea midfield players, to other teams before Flick made the decision to stick with his existing quality.

Lavia’s qualities are greatly admired by the director of Barcelona, who attempted to sign him last year as well—albeit on loan—while Chelsea paid €60 million to acquire him.

Deco decided to look into a move because the midfielder hasn’t been very prominent this year and has been out injured for nearly the whole year.

Chukwuemeka, meanwhile, has not been a key player in Chelsea’s plans and was connected to Barça in the summer.

The former Aston Villa prodigy reportedly made the same offer to the Catalans in the summer and is now doing it again as January approaches. Furthermore, Flick’s insistence on not wanting a midfield reinforcement puts an end to any likelihood of a move, even though Deco was thinking about it. Deco appears to be interested in neither of the 20-year-old Chelsea players, but a January deal appears unlikely.
