With a spectacular late derby victory over Inter Milan on Sunday, Matteo Gabbia gave AC Milan the local bragging rights and a 2-1 victory.
While Roma thrashed Udinese 3-0 as supporters protested the shocking dismissal of Daniele De Rossi, AC Milan stunned Inter Milan 2-1 thanks to a brilliant header from Matteo Gabbia, earning his team bragging rights. Milan emerged from a terrible start to the season when defender Gabbia leaped to the occasion and crushed in Tijjani Reijnders’ free kick in the 89th minute to earn Milan a Serie A victory.
Gabbia’s late winner put Paulo Fonseca’s team in seventh place with eight points, after Federico Dimarco had leveled Christian Pulisic’s outstanding 10-minute solo effort just before the half-hour mark.
“They played with a lot of courage today and I think we deserved to win, I can’t remember another team that have created so many problems for Inter like we did today,” Fonseca told DAZN.
Milan’s victory ended Inter’s record of six straight derby wins and prevented their rivals from surpassing Torino, the surprising early league leaders, on goal differential in Serie A.
After a challenging start to the season, they will feel more confident now that the pressure has been lifted off new coach Fonseca, whose team was deserving of victory.
“They were the better team tonight, we didn’t play as a team and that’s not something you can usually say about us,” Inzaghi added.
