The Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) has appointed the former Pakistani pacer Aaqib Javed as the new fast-bowling coach of the men’s national cricket team. Javed is appointed on a short-term basis and is set to work with the team till the T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies later this year.
Javed, the 51-year old was a part of Pakistan’s world cup winning campaign in 1992 and would bring in a lot of experience to the Sri Lankan side. He played for his nation in 22 tests and 163 ODIs and ended his career with more than 200 wickets to his name.
He also have had some success in his coaching career, once he left playing. He guided Pakistan U19 squad to World Cup glory in 2004. He was also a part of senior men’s team, as a bowling coach when they won the T20 World Cup in 2009.
Javed has also played the role of UAE’s head coach and has helped them gain ODI and T20 status. He is currently in the position of Director of Cricket Operations and head coach at the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
“We warmly welcome Aaqib and believe that his immense international experience, both in playing and coaching, will help our bowlers come into good shape ahead of the upcoming major international competitions, such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” said de Silva in the official press release from SLC.
