(Football news) Alaves could move six points clear of the relegation zone if they take a significant win at home, while Los Blancos have the opportunity to get back to the top of the standings.
Following a goalless draw with Mallorca and consecutive defeats without a response against Las Palmas and Girona, Alaves had not won any of their first three La Liga games in December since defeating Granada 3-1 at the end of November.
In the wake of his team’s 3-0 loss at Girona on Monday, Luis Garcia called it their “worst game of the year” and said that they will never win a La Liga away from home again until October 2021.
A win on Thursday in their final home league game of 2023 may not even be enough to help Los Blanquiazules climb the table as they sit three points behind Osasuna in 12th place. Currently ranked 13th in the top flight standings, they are only three points clear of the relegation zone and are one of several clubs in a tight survival battle.
However, Alaves will be happy to play again in Mendizorroza, where they have won 13 of their 16 points from 17 La Liga games thus far this season, including seven points from their previous four home games.
Triumph over the Spanish juggernauts Real Madrid could be difficult to beat, though, since they have dropped 15 of their previous 17 matches in the top division; in addition, Alaves have lost the most games (28) and given up the most goals (92) to Los Blancos in their top tier history.
