(Football news) The two teams are playing each other for the first time ever despite being in different divisions of the English Football League (EFL). The home team competes in League Two, while the visitors play in the Premier League. With just one point separating them from the relegation zone after nine games, Salford has not had the best of starts to the League Two season. They are now in 21st place.
The Ammies have dropped four straight league games, and they are currently on a five-game losing streak across all competitions, which is hardly encouraging going into a game against Premier League opposition.
Neil Wood will be quite disappointed that his team lost their most recent game, 3-2, against a struggling Harrogate Town team. The losses against top-of-the-table Notts County and recently relegated Accrington Stanley can perhaps be justified.
After conceding at least two goals in each of their previous four games, the Ammies are still without a clean sheet since the first day of the season, thus Wood will need a significantly greater defensive effort on Tuesday night.
Salford has, however, already shown this season that they are capable of defeating difficult competition in the league by defeating Leeds United in the second round following a penalty shootout. This is the only promising indication for Salford going into the forthcoming EFL Cup encounter.
However, even if Burnley has suffered in the early going of the season, they should still be confident going into this Tuesday’s matchup given that they are once again a Premier League team.
To be fair to the Clarets, they have faced some very difficult opponents, losing to Manchester City at home in their first game and going up against teams like Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, and Manchester United.
They overcame Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground to advance to this stage of the competition, and they also drew 1-1 with the Tricky Trees in league play. When Vincent Kompany’s club met teams of a comparable calibre, they have looked significantly more promising.
Burnley will be hoping to bounce back with a victory against a Greater Manchester team on Tuesday night after narrowly losing to Man United at home in their previous match. Bruno Fernandes scored the game’s only goal in a tightly contested affair.
